Our growing tradition in Spalding dates back to 1904, when Cornelius Slooten journeyed from Holland by boat and then train to Spalding to work for a farmer keen to learn from his experience of bulb growing. A few years later, he established his own business and began a long career, settling at our current site in 1923. Today, the business is run by Richard van Egmond, assisted by Ben Wheeler, continuing the family’s long-standing growing tradition.
Sadly, by the 1990s bulbs were no longer profitable, and since the turn of the millennium we have shifted our focus more towards plants. Now a fourth-generation business, we produce a wide range of shrubs, climbers and perennials, as well as a smaller range of trees — not always the run of the mill. We supply professional gardeners, plant retailers and estates.
We aim to propagate a proportion of our range in-house, which occasionally leads to the development of new cultivars or selections that we particularly value and may be found only here. Over the past 20 years as garden plant growers, we have built up a wealth of knowledge, which we enjoy sharing with our passionate and knowledgeable customers.
